As a portal that connects painters and decorators with the customers who need them, we’re always on the lookout for professionals to join our ranks. We take the hard work out of finding tradespeople by giving customers access to the local decorators that best suit their requirements and budget. But even our decorating experts had to start somewhere!

Here we share our advice on how to become a decorator and detail what to do after qualifying to gain the experience to take your career to new heights.

Understand

There’s so much more to a career as a painter and decorator than applying paint, wallpaper and other finishes to interiors and exteriors.

To enjoy a successful career and a decent wage, you’ll need to demonstrate a meticulous attention to detail, collaborate cohesively with others, be flexible, work well under pressure, and have great customer service and business management skills. You’ll also need to be comfortable working at height. Understanding these skills and qualities from the outset is vital.

Study

While traditionally becoming a painter and decorator requires no formal education, the majority of professionals starting out today prefer to gain a good grounding with a college course, apprenticeship or on the job training.

When studying at college, you can enrol on a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating course, or a T Level in On Site Construction to build formal skills and succeed in the world of decorating. Decorating apprenticeships are also popular, and take up to three years to complete.

Specialise

Upon qualification, many painters and decorators choose to specialise to really hone their craft. Here at Look4 Decorators for instance, we share the services of those specialising in commercial decoration, domestic decoration, outdoor painting, spray painting, plastering, tiling, and wallpapering.

Certify

Whatever route you went down to qualify as a decorator, gaining certification from a professional industry body will help you win business, network, build a good reputation, and ultimately grow your company.

The Painting and Decorating Association is the UK’s only trade and employers’ association for the industry and offers memberships along with a range of benefits.
